Exhibitions
Our theme for conference 2012 is:
"Pioneers of Stitch"
The inspiration was taken from the many women who have pioneered in their field in New Zealand over the years, we follow in the footsteps of those pioneering women, and our Exhibition Themes reflect this.
Open "Creating Change": (Selected)
Inspired by Kate Sheppard - Women's Suffrage
Most of you will be familiar with the work of Kate Sheppard and the Open Exhibition is expected to be at the cutting edge of embroidery and is often a contentious exhibition just like the work of Kate Sheppard.
Criteria:
- Open to all embroiderers and craft persons.
- Work must be original in concept and design.
- Multi-media entries with a good percentage of stitch content, by hand or machine, would be considered.
- Presentation of work must be an integral part of total work.
- Entries must not have been exhibited previously at any exhibition.
- Work must have been created within the last two years.
- All work in this open exhibition must be for sale - a gallery commission will apply.
Members "From the Decorative to the Abstract": (Selected)
Inspired by Frances Hodgkins - Artist
Over the years the work that Frances produced
changed from that which she was taught to produce (as a woman artist) to
a more creative and experimental type of work. This is often the path we as stitchers take - we start with the traditional work and then branch out into the more creative work. We have a number of people throughout the country that stitch fabulous traditional work but we rarely get to see it at exhibitions so I am hoping that with this title it will encourage some of you to create a stunning piece of work to exhibit and for those of you branching out, be brave and submit your work.
Criteria:
- Entries to be the work of a member of a Guild affiliated to ANZEG. Refer to General Conditions.
- No kits, charts or workshop designs accepted.
- Work may be traditional, innovative/creative.
- Lace will be accepted.
- All embroidery must reflect the individuality of the maker.
- Entries must not have been exhibited previously at any exhibition.
- Work must have been created within the last two years.
Miniature "New Expression": (Selected)
Inspired by Katherine Mansfield - Writer
Again many of you will be familiar with the work of Katherine
Mansfield. The miniature exhibition's criteria is that a miniature is an
"Interpretation of something larger" hence the title "New Expression".
Katherine drew on her own life experiences to write many of her short stories.
- For the purpose of this exhibition, a miniature embroidery is a smaller version of the original subject.
It is not a small embroidery, i.e. a portion selected out of a full-size version of an original subject.
- The work area of each item must not exceed 15cm x 15cm, excluding the mount or frame BUT the final presentation of the work must be an integral part of the finished piece.
- The total worked surface area of any three dimensional object must not exceed 15cm square.
- Entries must not have been exhibited previously at any exhibition.
- Work must have been created within the last two years.
Young Persons "First Impressions": (Non-Selected)
Inspired by Elsie Locke - Children's Author
Elsie wrote many books, a number of which were for children. The work of
Young People always has a fresh approach, and is often a new interpretation
of the original idea. They are not restricted by the way we think as adults so
therefore they can create some fantastic pieces.
Criteria:
- Any young person under 18 years of age at 30 June 2012 may submit work for this exhibition.
- Entries to be the work of The Young Person submitting the item and contain a significant stitch content (hand or machine).
Guild Displays
With 59 guilds throughout New Zealand we can assure you that it will be a display well worth viewing!
Hopefully this explanation will help you in your planning for Conference 2012. You may like to go away and research the people that have inspired the title of the exhibition you wish to enter and think about their life, their work, the medium they created in and come up with an original piece of work to submit. Good luck, happy stitching and I will look forward to seeing what you submit.
